Membrane Types and Recommendations
FISP® probes are equipped with either a ceramic or polypropylene micro-porous
membrane. While both materials may not show any noticeable variation in
performance, we recommend usage based on the membrane descriptions below.
Polypropylene Membrane: (Recommended for
Short Term Fermentations or Continuous Sampling)
- Higher percentage porosity than ceramic membrane for better results when
continuous sampling
- Hydrophobic material requires pre-treatment with 70% isopropyl alcohol to
make it hydrophilic
- High antifoam concentrations can cause membrane to revert back to being
hydrophobic
Ceramic Membrane: (Recommended for Long Term
Fermentations or Intermittent Sampling)
- No pre-treatment of membranes required
- Smoother surface allows the vessel contents to sweep across the membrane,
dislodging any particulates
- Can be autoclaved as well as sterilized in place
- No effects from high concentrations of anti-foam agents

- Fits into the fermentors/bioreactors side port

- Used primarily for yeast, bacteria and fungal fermentations
